Petition “Funding and expansion of the Studierendenwerk instead of price increases - Together against the 13th monthly rent!”
Students from dormitories of the Studierendenwerk Hamburg are protesting the inadequate public funding of the Studierendenwerk by the city government. Starting next year, the deficit shall be compensated by students through increases in food prices, rents and semester fee.
The students are demanding rents not higher than 270 € per month, the construction of additional dormitories for 15% of all students and a reduction in food prices and the semester fee.
For this, a drastic increase in public funding from the FHH (Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg) is necessary. In reality, the already promised increase of 1.2 million € is a cut. In the last two years, the Studierendenwerk has been compensated completely for its much higher deficit.
Education cannot be a luxury! For this reason the Studierendenwerk was founded in 1922. The Studierendenwerk was founded in 1922 as a social institution to enable everyone to study. In a city that wants to be a centre of science, studying cannot fail because of poverty.
No future without science! We are dependent on research to solve global problems such as the climate crisis or worldwide hunger. As a society, we therefore cannot afford fewer students.
This is why students have launched the petition ‘Funding and expansion of the Studierendenwerk instead of price increases - Together against the 13th monthly rent!’ and have already collected 1,000 signatures in just a few weeks.
At over 77%, students are the poorest population group. The Hamburg Senate must fulfil its social responsibility and do change that!
