"If you have swing in your blood, you can't march in step."
Coco Schuhmann, former member of the Ghetto Swingers, Theresienstadt 1943
Swing spread across Europe at the beginning of the 20th century - creative, egalitarian, rebellious. Its roots lie in jazz and the Civil Rights Movement in the USA. It stood for freedom, joie de vivre and a hopeful future. This is exactly what the fascists feared. They declared swing to be “degenerate music” and banned it.
But resistance cannot be banned. The Swingkids in Germany, the Schlurfs in Austria and the Zazous in France danced anyway and showed that there is always a humane alternative!
This year we are celebrating 80 years of liberation from fascism and world war! Let's bring swing back to the dance floors of universities and society - against rearmament, militarization and right-wing ideology. For disarmament, international understanding and peace!
